Did You Know That Bipolar Disorder Is Also Known As Manic Depression?

This sickness causes extreme mood modifications and swings, vacillating between manic (high) episodes of exceptional and abnormally high energy levels, and depressive (low) extremely lows energy levels.

Bipolar Disorder can be so severe you may not be able to properly function in a work capacity and, therefore, may not be able to be gainfully employed. This Disorder can hamper family and social life. Often, people with this disease become suicidal.

The Cause: An imbalance of chemicals in the person's brain, and can often be inherited in some families.

The Symptoms: During an episode, you could be abnormally "high" or extremely happy, spend exorbitant and excessive amounts of money, do tremendously dangerous things and obtain very little sleep. After the episode diminishes and passes, you feel very sad, deeply depressed and very hopeless.

Bipolar Disorder can be mild or severe. Episodes can develop over days and weeks, and come on in an instant. These events can last a few hours or various months.

Bipolar Disorder is very hard to diagnosis because of its a lot varied symptoms and the dissimilar facets or phases; there are no laboratory tests to confirm the disease and only blood and urine samples can be taken to remove other possibilities.

Treatment is by a combination of medicines to aid balance or attempt to even out the manic period with the depression. Mood stabilizers and anti-psychotics are often prescribed. Antidepressants must be carefully dispensed so as not to launch the patient into another manic cycle.

Counseling is an absolute necessity for the patient as well as the family in order to cope and deal, as well as attain a basis from which the disease can be managed.

Hospitalization may be important during some of the extreme manic times in order to prevent the patient from getting injured or to prevent the patient from attempting suicide.

Over three million Americans or one percent of the population suffer Bipolar Disorder. The disease begins its onset between the ages of fifteen and twenty-four.
